Many people experience difficulties incident to their home remodeling projects.  Common complaints include delays in the completion of work, cost overruns and disputes concerning the quality of the work.  Many of these problems can be avoided by taking precautions before the work begins.  Here are a few suggestions to help avoid these problems:

Do your homework. Request references and follow up by contacting the references.  Call the CA Contractors State License Board at (800) 321-2751 or visit the website at www.cslb.ca.gov  to determine whether the contractor’s license is in good standing and if any complaints have been filed.  Protect yourself contractually.  All home improvement contracts must contain the following information:

  • Dates of commencement and substantial completion
  • Description of the work, plans and scale drawings
  • Payment schedule with terms and limitations
  • Specific change order details
  • Notice regarding potential mechanic’s lien rights of subcontractors and suppliers
  • Notice describing your right to request a payment and performance bond
